‘The Beauty of Cold’ is my debut book. It is due to be released in May 2026.

“The Beauty of Cold is a stunning invitation to return to ourselves through the elemental power of cold. Gilly McArthur’s personal stories and hard-won wisdom shine throughout, reminding us that there is quiet joy and deep strength in facing who we truly are. This is more than a book—it’s a ritual, a reconnection, and a beautifully told plunge into presence.”

Ella Foote, Editor – Outdoor Swimmer Magazine and Swim Guide

Much like my quest for cold water high up in the hills, writing for me is an adventure into the unknown. I never know what I’ll discover until I put pen to paper!

Writing serves as a wonderful outlet for thoughts and expressions that I’ve contemplated during those moments in nature. I’m particularly inspired by nature poetry, and one of my favorite authors is Scottish writer Nan Shepherd, who grew up in my town, attended my school, and roamed the very hills I love.

Like my illustrations, the writing process can sometimes feel effortless and flowing, while other times it can be a struggle—especially when deadlines loom!

Not ideal. Yet, no matter the challenge, it remains an enjoyable journey of discovery, and helps to deepen my connection to the outdoors and allows me to express my observations through a different medium when it’s too wild to be outdoors.
